Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before uploading your first document.

02What documents can I analyze?

Legibly currently supports the following document types:

  • Rental agreements — residential leases, sublease agreements
  • Insurance policies — home, tenant, auto, life
  • Bank documents — account agreements, loan terms
  • Mortgage documents — commitment letters, disclosure statements
  • Investment & financial — RRSP, TFSA, RRIF, RESP, FHSA, mutual fund/ETF statements, fund facts (not investment or tax advice)
  • Other contracts — employment, service, NDA, and general agreements

Court filings and government forms are not optimized. The analysis may still run but results may be less precise.

03How accurate is the analysis?

Legibly uses Claude (Anthropic) with document-specific prompts built and tested for each document type. For standard consumer PDFs, summaries are usually strong on rent amounts, dates, fees, and clearly written clauses.

AI can make mistakes. It can miss nuance, misread tables or scanned pages, or misjudge unusual wording. Every highlight and risk includes a confidence level — “High confidence” means the model is fairly sure the text appears in your document, not that a lawyer or government source verified it.

Use Legibly alongside your original document, not instead of it. For signing, disputing, or enforcing terms, talk to a qualified professional.

04Does it check current law or the web?

No. Legibly analyzes only the file you upload. It does not search the internet, look up statutes, or confirm whether a clause still matches current law in your province or territory.

That is intentional: our positioning is “here is what this document says” — not legal advice and not a regulatory compliance check. If a lease references an old rule or an insurance policy omits a newer disclosure, Legibly will not catch that unless it is written in the document itself.

The AI model also has a knowledge cutoff and will not know events or law changes after its training date. For questions about current rights or filing deadlines, use official government sources or a licensed professional.

05How is my data protected?

Uploads are sent only to our AI provider for the duration of the analysis request. After analysis, we retain your original file (encrypted private storage), extracted text, and plain-English summary so you can reopen the result — all scoped to your account with row-level security.

Files are never used to train AI models and are not shared publicly. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

06How long are analyses stored?

Original files, extracted text, and saved analyses are automatically deleted 90 days after creation. You can also delete individual analyses or your entire account at any time from your account settings.

Aggregate analytics (document type, processing time, risk counts) are retained indefinitely to improve the service. This data contains no document content and cannot be linked back to a specific file.

07What file formats are supported?

All plans: PDF files up to 20 MB. Page limits depend on your plan (Free: 4 pages, Starter: 10, Plus: 15, Pro: 20).

Pro plan only: Photos (JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC) of the same document—one analysis is either a PDF or photos, not both.

Minimum image size is 400 × 400 px; blurry or very dark photos may not produce reliable results. HEIC (iPhone) photos are accepted in most browsers. If upload fails, convert to JPEG first.

08What plans are available?

Legibly is pay-per-document first:

  • Free — 1 analysis when you sign up. PDF or photo, up to 4 pages.
  • Analysis packs — $6.99 (1), $9.99 (3), or $19.99 (10). PDF or photo per credit. No subscription.
  • Pro ($39.99/mo) — 25 analyses/month, up to 20 pages. For frequent use.

Usage resets on the first day of each calendar month for paid plans. See the pricing page for the latest details.

09Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes — you can cancel at any time. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period, then reverts to Free. We do not offer partial-month refunds.

To cancel, email support@readlegibly.com with your account email and we will process it within one business day. A self-serve cancellation flow is coming soon.

10Why was my free analysis used?

The Free plan includes exactly one analysis — it does not renew monthly. If you have used that analysis, upgrading to a paid plan is the only way to continue.

If you believe your analysis was used in error (for example, the upload failed but usage was still counted), contact support and we will investigate.

11Something went wrong

If an upload fails, an analysis returns an error, or you encounter unexpected behaviour, please email support@readlegibly.com with a brief description and your account email. We aim to respond within one business day.
